Band Camp 2018 Preparation

Band Camp 2018 is right around the corner!  Here are some things to know as camp approaches.

Forms and Uniform Incentive

There is a list of forms that are required to be turned in. These include the band contract, physical form, notarized out-of-county field trip, and instrument rental (if needed). We will have a form turn-in each Monday during the morning (7:15-8-00) and evening sessions (4:15-5:00). We will also have a notary on hand during the form turn-in sessions to get the Out-of-County form notarized. This gives you six opportunities to turn-in these forms. If you do this and pay ALL band and class fees, you will be able to keep your students uniform after picture day. This will greatly decrease the amount of time you’ll have to wait in line at the mandatory parent meeting in August. We will have tables setup and volunteers taking the forms.

Physical

Every marching band student, guard, and dance are required to have a physical prior to band camp. If your student did not get the physical at BJHS at the end of last year, then you need to make sure it gets done this week. You can go to your personal physician or a drop in clinic. Turn-in will take place on the first day of band camp.

Band Camp Section Shorts

Your student will need shorts in the color below for their section. The style of short doesn’t really matter, whatever is comfortable for them.

Flutes- Black

Clarinets- Blue

Saxes- Purple

Trumpets- Red

Mellophones- Yellow

Trombones/Baritones- Orange

Tubas- Pink

Percussion- Green

Guard- Grey

Dance- Determined by coach

Uniform Fittings

Uniform fittings will be scheduled during the lunch period the first week of band camp. Fittings are done by grade level. Please refer to the schedule once it is released. If you are a returning band member, then you are encouraged to locate your jersey, compression shirt and compression shorts this week . You will need them for inspection. If you are a sibling of a former student and you are going to wear your sibling’s compression shirt or compression shorts, then you will also be required to bring those items in for inspection. Students whose jerseys, compression shirts or compression shorts do not pass inspection will be required to purchase new ones. New students will be required to order a band jersey. All students will be required to order a member shirt, member shorts and a string bag. The member shorts are not the same as the section shorts. They are an additional uniform item requirement this year.

Madison Band Supply Items

Madison Band Supply will be available on the first day of band camp during the lunch period. Parents are welcome to shop with their students. You can place your band shoe order as well as purchase gloves, lyres, flip folders and other items on this day. An order form will be attached in the band camp instructions, please print a copy and bring it with you. There is no shipping charge for shoes if you order them from Madison Band Supply in the band room. They should be delivered to the school the following week in time for band photos.

 

Band Camp Volunteers

We need A LOT of volunteers during the day at band camp. We have to watch the kids from the medical tent and be ready to help students who get too hot, fit uniforms, collect forms, serve watermelon, etc. This is way too much work for just the board members to handle. Please go here and volunteer.  We also serve watermelon to the kids each day.  We take donations of watermelon for this.  Please use the same Signup Genius link to donate.

Rookie Parent Meeting

We will have two rookie parent meetings on the first day at band camp. The morning session will take place at 8:15 am in the band room and the evening session will take place at 5:15 in the band room. If you are new to BJHS Band (either 9th grader or moved in), please plan to attend. We will go over everything you need to know for the fall marching season. We will also have a uniform care clinic during each session.

2018 Color Guard Audition Information

Clinic Days: April 24-26 (4-6pm) – BJHS gym

Audition: May 3 (5:00pm) – BJHS Bandroom

Football Color Guard

  • A Clinic Fee of $10 is required prior to tryouts for all individuals regardless of the outcome of auditions.  This will help cover Judges Fees and other expenses.
  • April 24-26th will include basic flag work (which could include drop spins, speed spins, stirs and tosses), body technique, and a short audition routine will be learned.  No weapon work will be taught.  All basics and the routine will be performed in groups on May 3rd for the audition.
  • Results will be announced the evening of May 3rd via the BJHS band website.  This audition is for football band only.
  • Audition attire on May 3rd will be form fitting black pants (or capris) and a black top.  Hair must be pulled back from the face.  You may wear makeup, but it is not required.
  • All individuals selected for membership in the Color Guard will be adjudicated by independent judges using a RUBRIC and must be able to demonstrate these essential elements which include, but are not limited to:
    • Aerobic Conditioning
    • Movement
    • Flexibility
    • Performing Skills
    • Coordination
    • Marching and Maneuvering
    • Ability to Grasp Concepts
    • Attitude
  • If new to the color guard you MUST attend all audition days.  Current color guard members must attend on April 26th and the audition on May 3rd.  Please make plans to arrive on time and do not plan to leave early.
  • A flag will be provided for you at the audition.
  • No spectators will be allowed to watch any portion of the audition.
  • All former members of the BJHS Color Guard must audition each year.  Failure to attend auditions will result in removal from the color guard.

Mandatory parent meeting: Thursday, May 10 (6:15pm) – BJHS Bandroom

Weapon Interest Meeting and rehearsal: Tuesday, May 15 (4-6pm) – BJHS Bandroom

If you’re interested in spinning weapon this rehearsal is required.

Competition Color Guard

  • Competition guard will be selected no later than July 3rd.
  • To be selected for competition band, you must attend The University of Alabama Spin Clinic (TBA) at Bob Jones.
    • If you are not able to attend this clinic, a written note stating the reason you cannot attend and stating why you would like to be considered for Competition Guard must be provided to Brooke prior to the Spin Clinic Date.

Winter Guard

  • The Bob Jones Winter Guard is a select group of color guard members that competes in the Southeastern Color Guard Circuit during the spring semester
  • Auditions are held in October
  • Winter guard is an extracurricular ensemble and competes in several Saturday competitions during the spring semester

2017 Picture Ordering

Here are the instructions for students to access and purchase their individual shots taken during band camp.

If anyone that purchases their child’s picture would like to use the Greg Machen image for their football program ad, they can email or call us and we will be happy to send that image over to the printer for them.
To view the band, dance team, or color guard pictures, please follow the instructions below.
3. Type in your email address and the password provided below.
PASSWORDS are one word and are lower case letters
BAND = band
COLOR GUARD = colorguard
DANCE TEAM = dance
ORDERING:
The deadline for ordering is August 15. After this date, a $10 late fee will be added.
For packages containing groups, please specify whether you want the BIG GROUP or a section, Dance Team group or Color Guard group. There is a place for you to make a note during the ordering process. Please be specific on the band section name.
If ordering a Sports Mate, make sure you select the individual’s image so that we know who your child is. You will be asked what group to include on that Sports Mate.
TURNAROUND:
We will process all portrait orders after the deadline date. Turnaround is approx 3 weeks.
**DELIVERY — PLEASE READ**:
You will have the option to select whether to have your package delivered to the school or to pick your order up from our Madison office. LATE ORDERS WILL NOT BE DELIVERED TO THE SCHOOL.

Band Camp 2017

Band Camp is going great! The band has already set the drill and music for the first football piece, 25 or 6 to 4 (Chicago) and they’re sounding awesome. They’ll be working on the dance feature, Free Ride (Edgar Winters Group) today to wrap up a great first week.

Be sure to thank everyone who works to make this a success! Hospitality has provided watermelons, Chaperones has ensured we have parent helpers at all times, and Uniforms has gotten everyone fitted with a uniform for the year. Our Secretary has worked to make sure everyone is in Charms and their paperwork is current and our Notary has been available several times to notarize required forms. Of course, we also rely on numerous parents. Remember all of these are volunteers!

And don’t forget that our band directors, staff members, and the kids all provide the hard work and talent to make the magic happen!

This is going to be a great year!
